To each their own. But here is what I learned a year into service.
- Don’t bring lots of clothes. Thrift stores and boutiques will be available wherever you are placed. Throughout your time in Guatemala, you can carefully curate your closet so your clothes serve you for the weather, your job, style, and comfort. Experiment with what works and, equally important, what doesn’t. Take this opportunity and build from the ground up. It’s actually quite fun.
- Leave the books. Hardcover books are comfortable and cozy but also heavy and spacious. Almost all of us use the Libby App or have Kindles. I use the free Amazon Kindle App on my phone and computer.
- Forget the musical instruments, puzzles, board games, and sports equipment. Buy them when you get to your site. There won’t be time during training to use them, and you’ll just have to lug them around.
